Boys Soccer Begins Six-Game Homestand With Championship Aspirations

Eleven months ago, the St. Andrew’s boys soccer team entered the MAC Tournament as an underdog but managed to pull off upsets in the quarterfinals and semifinals to advance to the championship game.

While that title contest ended with a 1-0 loss to Flint Hill, there’s no doubt the tournament run allowed the season to end on a high note for the Lions.

And that high note has continued to play throughout the 2017 season. The Lions are currently 7-2 on the season, including a 5-2 mark in MAC play. They are just one point behind first-place Flint HIll. They’ve taken wins over Sidwell and Potomac, teams that beat them last year, as well as Georgetown Day, St. James and Maret. On the year, they’ve outscored opponents 35-10.

“We have a great group of guys who are deeply dedicated to the team and each other,” said head coach Alex Haight. “They’ve worked really hard on team chemistry and team dynamics. We’ve talked about that, we’ve stressed that. We have no more or less talent, it’s been this group coming together.”

The Lions will look to continue their great start, and keep playing for each other, on Friday when they host Sidwell on Brumbaugh Field at 4:30 p.m. It’s the first of six straight games at home to close out the season, as they look to bring home a MAC banner.

Stepping onto the field each game is an experienced group of players with six seniors and seven juniors. Haight is hoping that the lessons about playing together are ones that continue after this year ends, regardless of how it ends.

“You never know year to year,” Haight said. “Hopefully the lessons we’ve learned, that they’ve learned, we can continue. It’s about playing as well as we can now, but also about passing this along. Hopefully we can create a standard of this is what’s expected on this team.”
