St. Andrew's Graduates Class of 2017 at Washington National Cathedral

On Friday morning, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School graduated 78 seniors in a ceremony held at Washington National Cathedral. Fred Ryan, publisher of The Washington Post and father of 2017 graduate Caroline Ryan, was the school’s commencement speaker.
Ryan spoke to the assembled students, family, teachers and administrators about the importance of taking risks.

“Many decades from now, when you are reaching the end of your years, you will reflect back on the highlights of your life,” Ryan said. “On that day, I believe it is far better to regret some of the bold decisions you made, and the chances you took, then to regret the things that you never did.”

Head of School Robert Kosasky began the ceremony by thanking parents, faculty and staff, and trustees for helping students reach this important milestone.

“Thank you, parents,” Kosasky said. “You have prioritized education for your children, working hard for years to give them unsurpassed opportunities, including attending St. Andrew’s. In countless ways, you have helped St. Andrew’s fulfill its mission to challenge and support your children.”

A pair of students offered reflections on behalf of the graduating class. John Joyner, who earned the Faculty Award for Leadership in Equity and Inclusion offered the first reflection. He will attend Catholic University in the fall. The second reflection was offered by Will Lucas, a Cum Laude inductee and the recipient of the Excellence in the Study of Visual Arts Award. He will attend NYU in the fall. A prayer for the Class of 2017 was offered by Bridgette Kontner and Haylee Hayes. Both members of the Cum Laude Society, Hayes will attend Vanderbilt while Kontner is heading to NYU as well.
