Winter Musical 'Cabaret' Debuts Friday

The Upper School winter musical this year is the Kander and Ebb classic, Cabaret.
“What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play!” The words ring from the musical’s title song, Cabaret. The 1966 musical “Cabaret” has been a massive success since, with the book written by Christopher Isherwood, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb.

One of the most vibrant shows St. Andrew’s has produced, it also carries much historical significance. Taking place in 1930s Berlin, the show highlights a wild cabaret club on the backdrop of rising political tumult.

The Kit Kat Club is outrageous and entertaining, all led by the Emcee, played by Justin Harmon ‘17. Bringing life to this incredible character, Justin’s fabulous dancing, accompanied by his lovely Cabaret Girls, simply cannot be missed. A contrast to this untamed expression of art, reserved author Clifford Bradshaw, played by Louis Poirot ’17, leads the audience through his journey in Berlin. The story captures his adventures in the club, his attempts to write a novel, and eventual love interest in the club’s magnificent leading lady, Sally. Sally Bowles is played by Ashley Webb ‘18, and between her flirty antics and breathtaking performances, the audience is captivated from start to finish.

A masterpiece of a musical, the students have put in hours of time and a plethora of creativity to allow the show to take flight. Between student-constructed sets and lighting, a student-directed band, and powerful ensemble numbers, it is truly an impressive and fun show. So, as the musical so boldly states, “Come to the Cabaret!”
