Dance Company to Present "The Right to Fly" on Saturday at Annual Spring Dance Concert

This year’s Upper School Spring Dance Concert will be held on Saturday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. and is entitled, The Right to Fly, featuring choreography by students and SAES dance instructor Roxie Thomas.
Ms. Thomas explains that the title refers to this year’s theme, “the right of freedom of movement, finding a voice and having a voice.” The dances reflect a wide range of styles, musical genres and moods, while exploring the subject of personal creativity. Humor and accessiblity marks these pieces.

Eight pieces are the work of student choreographers. Praise Carson’s (’14) I Have the Right to It All with music by John Legend; Kaitlin Smith (’13) has created Flying Time to the song “Nuclear Seasons” by Charlie XCX; Christian Mason’s (’13) piece, When Dark Angels Cry, debuted at last week’s performing arts awards assembly; Remember the Time: M.J. and Me is Drew Looney’s (’13) tribute to his idol, Michael Jackson; Christina Farley (’12) has put together a dance to “Fader” by the Australian group The Temper Trap. rEVOLution, by Alex Palmer (’12), uses the song “Shuriken” by French electropop artist, Madeon; Zsari Delaney ('15) performs "If My Velvet Rope" to the music of Janet Jackson; A quartet of seniors, Adam Barton, Masha Edmonson, Janice Freeman and Abby Stephenson, have turned their interest in traditional Indian folk dance from Punjab into “Bhangra Like Nobody’s Watching You.” Roxie Thomas has added three pieces to the evening.
According to Ms. Thomas, this celebration of dance and creativity “is not about proving something to the audience - it's about proving to yourself that these are things you believe strongly in and you shouldn't allow others to persuade you to think differently. We are dancing for those who have no voice, who for some reason are unable to dance, either physically, economically, mentally, socially and spiritually.”

Assisting Ms. Thomas has been Ms. Hevia Paxson. Mr. Dan Mellitz is the technical director.
