Upper School Awards Assembly Recognizes Student Achievement

St. Andrew’s held its Upper School Honors Assembly on Thursday morning to recognize the achievements of the Class of 2019. Awards were handed out for excellence in academics, arts, athletics, leadership, diversity, and dedication to community service. Three juniors, one sophomore and one freshman also received awards.
Head of School Robert Kosasky and Assistant Head of School David Brown each addressed the graduating class in their final day on campus as students. Graduation takes place on Friday at Washington National Cathedral at 10 a.m.

Brian Harris, Chair of the Board of Trustees, presented the school’s highest honor, the William Way Award, named for the school’s Founding Board Chair. Ashley Cheung (Harvey Mudd College) received the award for her overall excellence in the classroom and achievements in robotics and technical theater, among other accomplishments. Also during the ceremony, Ashley was formally acknowledged as a National Merit Scholarship award winner.

Kosasky presented the Head of School Award to Isabelle Russell (Occidental College) and the David Mayhood Award to Sam Beesley (Oberlin College). First grade teacher Sung Hee Kim received the Finneran Faculty Scholar Award, which is granted annually to one St. Andrew’s teacher who embodies excellence and commitment to professional growth and is considered the highest recognition a St. Andrew’s teacher can receive. Kirstin Nicole-Schmidt (Duke University) was named the valedictorian while Giselah Graf-Suleman (University of Pennsylvania) was named salutatorian.
