Softball Undefeated in Early Season Games

The varsity softball team is undefeated in its first four games of the season, and players credit the hit start to confidence, trust and teamwork.
The team defeated McLean (16-5) and Holy Child (16-5) by wide margins, and came out on top after close calls against Maryland School for the Deaf (17-13) and Maret (11-8).

“The secret to success would be that we don’t compound errors anymore,” team captain Megan Blaine ‘18 said. “If someone makes a mistake, they shake it off.”

New additions to head coach Ashley Splaine’s staff, Meghan Hurney and Blaine’s father, Brad Blaine, have elevated the team’s performance, said catcher Ria Naab ‘18.

“They’ve been very interactive and we trust them,” Naab said. “That’s really the cause for success, when you trust your coach and can follow them.”

Third baseman Sofía González-Kosasky ‘18 said the team, which is mostly comprised of seniors and freshmen, has strong camaraderie, and that’s made a difference.

“The freshmen all have varied experience, but they’re willing to learn and they’re willing to play. They contribute a lot to the team cohesion,” said González-Kosasky. “It feels like we all have strong bonds with each other. Whether someone is on the bench or on the field, it feels like everyone is on the same standing.”

Naab said this teamwork will set the program up for success in years to come.

“This year we’re stepping up as leaders and helping the freshmen,” Naab said. “I think the underclassmen are very motivated with the knowledge that they’re going to be the team next year and they won’t have us around to help, so they’re learning as much as they can while they still can.”

The team plays two ISL league opponents next week, starting April 23 with Madeira at home and away at Stone Ridge on April 26.
