Pre-k students learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dear Pre-K Families:
With a shorter, four-day school week, pre-kindergarten students were rested and ready to hear and say the /g/ sound, make assorted patterns and explore exciting facts about our solar system!
On Tuesday, we discussed how we were not in school on Monday and what it means to observe the important holiday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Children listened intently to the story, Martin Luther King Jr.: Civil Rights Leader by Grace Hansen, to learn how Dr. King believed in the rights of all people, no matter how they looked or what they believed. Students were introduced to new vocabulary words such as civil rights and peaceful protest. We explored how Martin Luther King Jr. led the effort to end segregation peacefully, modeling how we can show love and kindness to others.
We are having so much fun learning about space!
Our focus has been on the planets, their order from the sun, and the different characteristics of each planet. The children discovered how the sun, called “sol,” is actually a yellow dwarf star made up of super-hot gasses that warm and light our planet to sustain many living things!
We watched the Amazing space fact video. We practiced moving around the sun (the closest star to Earth). We will use spheres to demonstrate how the sun, Earth, and moon relate spatially to each other in our solar system. Our class project will be to make a paper mache Sun, and in Art, each student will make a different planet, so we will have the entire solar system hanging in our room!!
We practiced manipulating the /g/ sound in words and wrote the letter g using a variety of materials such as wooden sticks, chalkboards and chalk, crayons, journals and handwriting books, and the Wet, Dry, Try iPad application. All students should feel so proud! They are working very hard to master the sounds of our English language!
We are becoming pattern experts. Pre-k students can create their own AB, ABBA, and AABB patterns. Ask your student to show you one of these patterns. Next up in math, 3D shapes. We will discover that 3D shapes are all around us.
We look forward to sharing your child’s progress and areas for future growth with you in our upcoming Parent/Teacher conferences on Thursday, January 26, and Friday, January 27th. If you have not done so, please log into the Parent Portal on your Resource and select the Parent/Teacher Conferences icon to find a time that works best for your schedule that day!
Enjoy the weekend!
Warmly,
Atena and Jody
