Memuna McShane '15 Honored by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports

The National Consortium for Academics and Sports handed out seven Giant Steps Awards this past weekend, and a current St. Andrew’s student was one of the recipients. Memuna McShane ’15 was given the award from NCAS from a pool of nominees received from around the country. She was the only female student-athlete in the nation to receive the award.

As a toddler, Memuna survived the civil war in Sierra Leone despite losing her right arm to amputation after suffering a gunshot wound. She brought to the United States by aid organizations and eventually adopted by Kelly and Kevin McShane. Now a senior, Memuna has been a four-year member of the varsity girls soccer team and last year was featured on ESPN’s E:60.

The Giant Steps Awards are given to individuals who have overcome adversity while still succeeding in life, who use sport as a vehicle for positive social change, who break down barriers to provide opportunities to those who follow behind them, and individuals who inspire us to do great things using the positive aspects of sports.
