Winter Teams Impress at Match-ups and Championships

Whether they're taking the court, mat, track, or pool, St. Andrew’s varsity teams have had remarkable seasons, and it’s not over yet.
Lions in multiple sports have won individual titles, teams have had record-showings in championship meets, and the varsity boys basketball team, is in first place in the MAC and is currently ranked #10 in the Washington Post Basketball Top 20.

Here’s a quick look at the highlights from just this past week:

The boys and girls swim & dive teams competed at the Washington Metropolitan Prep School Swim Dive League Championship from February 2-4 at the University of Maryland. After placing 18th out of 22 teams in 2022, the girls swim & dive team finished this year in fifth place. The remarkable improvement comes two weeks after the team placed third at the ISL Championship, the highest finish by a coed school of our size in the history of the league and something that no coed school in the league has accomplished since 2016.

In addition to setting several school records, swimmers also set league records and earned coveted individual honors. At the MAC Championship, Joe Umhofer ‘24 was the league champion in the 100 BR and also set the MAC record for the event with a time of 58.04. Regan Phillips ‘24 was named All-ISL for the second year in a row. The swim & dive team is headed to Metros from February 9-11 to conclude the season.

Indoor track & field had an outstanding showing during Saturday’s meet at Episcopal High School. Several student athletes set new school records, including Simeon Sannieniola '23 in the long jump with a jump of 21 feet 1.5 inches, and the girls 4x200 meter relay, consisting of Savannah Wilson '24, Reid Wincup '24, Kata Buttrey '25, and Maddy Friedman '25. Of the 14 events that the team competed in at Episcopal, they placed in the top three at 10 of the events. The team heads to Georgetown Prep on Wednesday, Feb. 8 for the MoCo Private Championships

The wrestling team can boast a new All-MAC honoree. Dilan Graf-Suleman ‘24 placed first in the 150 class at the MAC Wrestling Tournament on February 4 at Sidwell Friends, earning the All-MAC. In the 120 class, Jackson Sherman ‘25 placed third. The team will compete tonight at the Varsity Wrestling Duals hosted by St. James.

Boys basketball is 17-4, 8-1 in the MAC. The team has three MAC games remaining - at Flint Hill on Feb. 9, home against St. James on Feb. 15, and at Sidwell on Feb. 17, a game that will likely decide the MAC regular-season title. The Lions also have a non-conference home game on Monday against Sandy Spring Friends School.
