Three Students Win Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
Three St. Andrew’s artists were honored with Scholastic Art & Writing Maryland Region awards, including a Silver Key Award, the second-highest recognition for a student artist.
Hannah Portner ‘24 picked up the Silver Key Award in Photography - Art for “Delight,” her black-and-white portrait of a ballerina devouring a seemingly endless supply of salty snacks.
Lara Alarapon ‘24 and Nando Molina ‘24 each picked up Honorable Mentions for their artwork. Alarapon earned her Honorable Mention in Digital Art for a portrait of a woman and her reflection, titled “Don’t You Trust Me?” Molina won four Honorable Mentions for his photography. His winning entries include a black-and-white portrait of a whimsical amphibian (“Curious Frog”), a remote landscape (“Following Past Footsteps”), a predator and its prey (“Food Chain”), and a rodent with a pint-sized ride (“Humanizing a Chipmunk”).
Now in its 100th year, the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative students in grades 7-12. Students apply in 28 categories of art and writing. Submissions are judged by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, and award winners are celebrated on local and national levels.
