Luke Armbruster Wins Small School State Title, Boys XC Team Finishes Second
Senior Luke Armbruster won the small school state title on Saturday while the boys’ cross country team had its best showing since 2013 as the team competed at the Maryland Small School State Championships, held at Georgetown Preparatory School.
Led by individual winner Luke Armbruster, the boys’ team was just edged out for the team title by JDS by a mere five points. Armbruster, a senior, earned the distinction of Maryland Small School State Champion by running a smart race that saw him not take the lead until the second mile. He overtook JDS’s Daniel Weiss, the race leader at the mile, with about a mile and a half to go and never relinquished his lead. His time of 17:25 helped him best the field of 48 runners and earn the individual title, a distinction he shares with his brother Alex ’14 who won the crown in 2013.
Following Armbruster, four runners scored for the boys: senior Andy Carr, racing to a fifth place finish in 18:17; sophomore Thomas Casasola with a time of 18:32, good enough for eighth overall; senior Josh Margolis, notching a 13th place finish with his time of 19:34; and senior Colin Hendrie, the final scorer with an 15th place finish in 19:43.
Senior Quinn Dunigan crossed the line soon after in 19:52 good enough for 18th place overall. Freshman Michael Crawford was the final varsity finisher with a time of 21:26 for 31st place. In the end, Jewish Day School defeated St. Andrew’s by a score of 37-32. In the junior varsity race, Gordon Reeves, Noah Merriam, Josh Magee, Stephen Speyer, Nick Tsintolas, Jake Ravitch, and Jake Lee all placed within in the top 10 to win the junior varsity title.
St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is a private, coeducational college preparatory day school for students in preschool (Age 2) through grade 12, located in Potomac, Maryland.
