Since its premiere in 1943 Oklahoma! has remained an important and hugely popular musical. The show was the first collaboration between the most successful team in American musical theater, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. Oklahoma!, Based on the play “Green Grows the Lilacs” by Lynn Riggs, tells the story of a small community in “Indian Territory” just before it becomes the state in 1907. Cowman Curly McLain courts the fiercely independent farm woman Laurey Williams. Will they finally get together? Handsome Will Parker wants to make fickle Ado Annie his wife, but can he convince Annie’s dad while competing with a new rival, the peddler Ali Hakim? The book is full of great characters and sharp comic writing. The score contains so many memorable songs, including, “Oklahoma,” “I’m Just a Girl That Cain’t Say No,” “The Surrey With The Fringe On Top,” “Kansas City.” and sports a few show-stopping numbers.
