Sophomore Caroline Schneider learned leadership skills and new swimming techniques from Olympic athletes during Labor Day weekend as she represented St. Andrew’s at the LEAD Sports Summit, a conference for teenage girl swimmers in Atlanta.
Caroline, who will be a co-captain of the swim team this winter, participated in workshops on topics ranging from confidence to nutrition, swam in clinics focused on the different strokes, and rubbed elbows with female Olympians, including the keynote speaker, five-time gold medalist Missy Franklin.
One of her biggest takeaways from the LEAD (Leadership, Empowerment & Athletic Development) Sports Summit was the importance of her attitude as a captain and as a teammate.
“Your team is so important, and the way that you interact with the people on your team will make the difference between a team that succeeds and a team that fails,” she said. “No matter what the skill levels are, if your team is close, if your team is positive, you’ll have 100 percent better luck winning or reaching your goals.”
Entering the swim season, Caroline’s visionary leadership for her team emphasizes the factors that can make or break a team outside of the pool, including proper nutrition, managing anxiety, and even cheering.
“I want them to know that it’s not just practice, but so many things outside of practice that can make you a better swimmer,” she said.
In addition to swimming for St. Andrew’s, Caroline is a student ambassador and member of the Captains Leadership Council. She interned with the CTTL’s Science of Teaching and School Leadership Academy this past July.
St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is a private, coeducational college preparatory day school for students in preschool (Age 2) through grade 12, located in Potomac, Maryland.
