St. Andrew's, CTTL Represented at SXSWedu

The largest education conference in America, SXSWedu, began on Monday and a pair of St. Andrew’s teachers were on hand to take part as presenters.

Glenn Whitman, St. Andrew’s Dean of Studies and the Director of the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning (CTTL), and Dr. Ian Kelleher, a St. Andrew’s Science Teacher and the CTTL’s Director of Research, are co-authors of the book Neuroteach: Brain Science and the Future of Education. They will be conducting a workshop on Tuesday morning titled “Are you a Neuroteacher… Yet?”

"We are privileged to be representing our St. Andrew’s colleagues and the work of the CTTL at one of the most innovative educational conferences in the world,” Whitman said. Last year, nearly 14,000 people attended the event, which brings together “a community of stakeholders passionate about the future of teaching and learning.”

Whitman and Kelleher’s workshop will be focused on professional growth and providing teachers a pathway based on the latest research in the interdisciplinary field of Mind, Brain, and Education Science. Participants will explore and help contribute to the design of a first-of-its-kind professional growth tool that moves a teacher or school leader from being a research-informed “novice” to a research-informed “leader.”

It’s been a busy time for Whitman, St. Andrew’s, and the CTTL. Last week, Head of School Robert Kosasky and Whitman presented at the National Association of Independent Schools annual conference during the speed innovation session on the topic “Research as Inspiration: Mind, Brain, and Education Science as a Driver for School Innovation.” St. Andrew’s was one of just nine schools chosen by NAIS to take part in the session. St. Andrew’s and the CTTL are also featured three times in the most recent version of Independent School magazine.
