More than 60 middle and upper school students were honored for their artistic talent on Monday April 28th at the annual Visual Arts Awards assembly. Students were given awards in the following categories: Middle School Art, Photography, Computer Graphics, 3-Dimensional Art and Design, Ceramics, 2-Dimensional Art and Design, and Yearbook.

Visual Arts department head Lauren Cook and her colleagues Tracey Goodrich, , Hevia Paxson, Gary Wyatt, and Evan Brooke celebrated the quality of the art and design produced by the student artists this year.

Speaking directly to the student body, Cook stated, “We are all born as artists, we are all born as unique creative beings. We can see this in the children in our pre-school program: they jump right in to painting and drawing and don't worry about doing it "right". And as we mature, layers of experience and awareness accrue over our artist selves, shaping who we are and our world view. Our challenge as learners is to keep cultivating our creative and artistic voices as we grow so that they aren’t muted or displaced by other kinds of expression. We all have artists inside ourselves, and sometimes we just need a little help to find them again."

Parent Margie Tommer of the St. Andrew’s Parents’ Association Cultural Arts Committee introduced The Judges’ Choice Awards. These awards honored work that was judged by St. Andrew’s parents who are all active professionals in the fields of visual art, art education, and communications. The judges took the criteria of creativity, personal expression, risk-taking, composition, and technical skill with materials into consideration when making their choices for the best student art of the 2013-2014 school year. The winning artists’ work will be displayed in the school for one year.

The Visual Arts department also recognized the seven art shows – Judges’ Choice Awardees, the Middle School Art Show, the exhibit of Haitian Art, the Digital and Traditional Photography Show, the St. Andrew’s Senior Art Show, the Science By Design Show, and the Spring Arts Celebration - displayed in the school’s Kreeger Gallery throughout the year as well as acknowledged the student art found in St. Andrew’s student literary magazine Creaturae. In addition, Goodrich praised the student ceramicists who helped raise over $1,000.00 for the Haiti Simple Supper by donating over 100 bowls that they had thrown.
