Juniors Collaborate on Coding Competition
Juniors Jason Gan and Owen Whitman, leaders of St. Andrew's Coding Club, created a Python competition for the St. Andrew's community. Due to the pandemic, they collaborated on the project from opposite sides of the globe - Jason in China and Owen in Maryland.
Their goal was to create a fun environment for students and teachers to learn the basics of the Python computer programming language.
"We set higher points for the harder problems, so this gives students positive feedback, to see what they can actually achieve by spending time on these challenges," Jason said. "They can physically see the process of learning throughout the competition."

"The best way to learn, in my opinion, is through challenges. You learn by doing, you learn by failing, and (with coding) you fail a lot!" Owen said. "My best projects are not the ones I succeed in but the ones I fail in, because I get just as much out of them. We based the competition around that."
Extracurricular opportunities like Coding Club are an outgrowth of St. Andrew's expanding computer programming and technology courses, which include Introduction to Game Design, Mobile Application Design and Development, Competitive Robotics, and D!Lab Engineering, Innovation, and Design Thinking.
