Casasola, Ryan Lead Lions to First Place at Sandy Spring

The St. Andrew’s boys cross country team traveled to Sandy Spring Friends School this week to take on four other schools. Spearheaded by senior captain Thomas Casasola and sophomore Charlie Ryan, the Lions won the meet, defeating host Sandy Spring by a margin of 27 points while also beating Washington International, Covenant Life, and Avalon. With the victory, the team now moves to 13-5 on the season.
The Lions capitalized on a great team performance by placing its top six runners in the top 10 of the race. As he has done all season, Casasola led the way. In the lead pack at the first mile, he finished fourth overall in a time of 18:24 in the 63-runner race. Ryan, running alone for the entirety of the race, finished in fifth place in 18:50 for the 5 km race.
 
Sophomore Harrison Kehler was next across the line in 19:05 for seventh place. Freshman Alex Myler had an outstanding breakthrough race by taking eighth overall in a time of 19:30. He improved by a minute and a half in the race. Senior captain Nick Tsintolas was right behind in 19:34 for ninth place to round out the scoring for St. Andrew’s.
 
Freshman Tyler Povinelli had a superb breakout race as well. His time of 19:45 was a nearly 40 second improvement and his first top ten performance of his high school career. Sophomore Connor McCloy, the seventh man for the Lions' varsity, notched a personal best of 20:08 to finish 13th overall.
 
Other runners setting personal bests included senior Justice Morgan (21:45 – 25th) as well as sophomores Will Clark (21:31 – 22nd), CJ Schlegel (22:03 – 30th), and Hunter Qin (22:21 – 32nd).
 
The Lions next race at Flint Hill on Wednesday, October 16.
