New and Returning Runners Look to Build on 2018 Success

Led by senior captains Thomas Casasola and Nick Tsintolas, the St. Andrew’s boys’ cross country team, coming off a very successful 2018 campaign that saw it finish third in the MAC league and second at the Small School State championship, appear poised for another competitive run during the 2019 season.
Casasola, an All-MAC and All-County runner last year, has come into the season prepared to assume the mantle of the team’s number one runner with the graduation of Small School State champion Sam Beesley ’19, who is now running at Oberlin College. Vying for the number two spot on the team will be sophomores Jack McCloy, an All-County runner, and Harrison Kehler. Both attended cross country camp this summer and return in great shape. Tsintolas, St. Andrew’s 6th man last season, is greatly improved and should be a regular point scorer for the team this fall.

A talented sophomore class of 14 runners provide the building blocks for a strong team of the future. Along with McCloy and Kehler, sophomores Tom Graueb and Connor McCloy should see significant action in the top seven as well. Sophomore Charlie Ryan, a newcomer to the team, had a great freshman season at his former school and has the potential to be a top three runner.

Junior Stephen Speyer, although out of commission until the end of September due to injury, has veteran experience that should serve him well as he returns to competitive racing in October. He, too, will likely move into the top five on the team. Andrew Pinto, a junior, and freshman Tyler Povinelli have shown that they have the ability to contribute at the varsity level as well.

The Lions begin the 2019 season on Tuesday September 10 at neighbor school Winston Churchill High School.
