Boys' Cross Country Concludes Season with Individual, Team Victories at Small School State Championships

The St. Andrew’s boys’ cross country team culminated one of its finest seasons ever on Monday, November 12 by finishing second at the Small School State meet held in Westminster, Md.
The Lions were edged out by a mere one point for the team title by Sandy Spring Friends School. St. Andrew’s defeated eight other teams to take second place, and senior Sam Beesley capped off a great career by winning the individual title.

The challenging McDaniel College golf course, the site of the meet, proved to be no challenge for Beesley, who bested a field of 61 small-school runners to win the individual state title. His time of 17:19 on the 5 km course was a personal best. He beat the second-place finisher, Robby Dubinski of the Severn School, by nearly five seconds. It was a superb end to one of the best seasons by a St. Andrew’s runner ever, as Beesley notched four individual victories in six races, including winning the County and State titles, not to mention earning All-MAC honors.

Freshman Jack McCloy had another standout performance to take 15th place overall in a personal best time of 18.53.66. Junior captain Thomas Casasola was right behind in a time of 18:54.07, good enough for 16th place. Sophomore Stephen Speyer paced himself to an 18th place finish in a personal best time of 19:11. Junior Nick Tsintolas (22nd) improved by nearly a minute to finish in 19:36 to round out the scoring for the Lions.

Freshmen Harrison Kehler (28th – 20:11) and Connor McCloy (34th – 20:40) were the other varsity finishers for St. Andrew’s.

In the junior varsity race, the Lions took the team title by placing four of its top seven in the top ten to beat three other schools. Sophomores Chris Latchford (3rd – 11:43), Andrew Pinto (4th – 11:52), John Matal (10th – 12:33) and junior Justice Morgan (9th – 12:26) led the way for St. Andrew’s over the 3 km course.

St. Andrew’s finished with a record of 39 wins and ten losses, a .795 winning percentage.
