Elementary Curriculum

Literacy

Our kindergarten through second grade language arts program helps each child learn to read. As students begin to show their strengths, they work closely with their classroom teachers to achieve their goal. Differentiated reading groups optimize the learning environment for individual children. Using a balanced literacy approach, in small and whole group instruction, students learn to decode using taught phonic skills, pattern word study, sight word vocabulary and context and picture cues. Students become thoughtful, reflective readers by responding to literature in writing and group discussions.

Our writing program is specifically designed to complement our reading curriculum. In whole and small groups, students explore the salient elements of a story, generating and writing their own stories. Throughout the writing process, students learn to apply their emerging skills in sentence formation, basic grammar, capitalization and punctuation.

Mathematics

As our students develop computational skills through concrete problem-solving activities, they proceed to more abstract thinking. In cooperative activities, they create, solve, and share their own word problems and become familiar with math vocabulary. Math games and manipulatives help students develop their math brain and become confident mathematicians.

Technology

The core operating dynamic of the Lower School technology curriculum is about empowering students through the use of technology. In service to this goal, and commitment to our developmental approach, our students are first and continuously taught digital citizenship while encouraged to become independent 21st century learners. Through recognizing, expanding, and applying their own knowledge in terms of technology skills and project topics, each student has the experience of being a more active participant in his or her own learning.

Caring Community

Each grade level in the Lower School executes grade-wide community service projects that actively involve all Lower School students in their individual classrooms. The goal is to help our children develop an awareness of the needs of the larger community and of their own ability to make a difference.

Recurring K-2 service projects include:
  • Haiti "Pots for Plots"
  • Toys for Tots
  • Canned Food Drive
  • Brownies in A Jar [Stepping Stones Shelter]
