Dance teacher Rachel Turner will take the world stage this fall when she performs in Europe and India with the Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh Company.
Turner, who is also an 8th Grade Advisor, left on Monday to begin five weeks of rehearsing, teaching, and performing in France, Belgium, Germany and India.
“It will be cool to be focused on one thing and experience what it’s like to be a full-time dancer,” Turner said.
Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh Company is based in Silver Spring and specializes in modern and Indian dance. Turner, who has performed Indian dance for eight years, said she is especially looking forward to visiting India and getting an “intimate look” at the country.
The company will enjoy arts and culture—in Belgium the group will perform at the Magritte Museum in Brussels—and also bring it to the people they meet. Turner said the company will teach dance workshops to children in Roubaix who may have limited exposure to the arts.
She said she anticipates her choreography for the spring dance concert will be inspired by her time abroad.
“I think it will make me more well-rounded as a dance teacher in that I can relate to my Upper School students what it’s really like to be a professional,” Turner said. “This is a chance to have five weeks to just do that.”
