St. Andrew's Episcopal School - Students & Parents

St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is an independent, coeducational day school in Potomac, Maryland whose purpose is to challenge and nurture students of diverse abilities and interests in grades 6-12. Study in the arts, athletics and spiritual life balance the academically rigorous curriculum. Small classes, dedicated faculty and strong service learning teach values in a safe college preparatory environment.

The goals of St. Andrew's community service program are to encourage students' concern and responsibility for their own community, and help students mature personally through a better understanding of the world's people. The requirement of 20 hours of service each year, 9th through 11th grades, and 60 hours in the final two weeks of the senior year, is intended to foster a commitment to continued service.

To fulfill the Community Service requirement, a student must:

1) submit a completed and signed Community Service Contract to the appropriate Community Service Grade Level Advisor. This contract must be in and approved before any work begins.

2) complete the required number of hours of service and complete the Community Service Time/Evaluation Sheet -- which must be signed by the on-site supervisor.

3) reflect on the community service experience in either written or oral form. Options for completing this element of the project include:

a) writing a two-page, typed, reflective paper for a 20-hour segment,

b) writing a three-page, typed, reflective paper for a 40-hour segment completed at one site, or

c) giving a 3 - 5 minute oral report at Morning Meeting or at a grade-level meeting. This oral presentation must be pre-arranged with the grade-level community service advisor. Please complete and have your Community Service Advisory sign the Community Service Oral Report Completion Form. As you prepare your Oral Report, you may find the questions on the Oral Presentation Outline helpful.

We recommend that students keep a reflective journal documenting meetings, site visits, conversations on site, and impressions of the experience. This journal can then be used as the basis of the reflective paper or oral presentation.

Please look at the Directory of Agencies at right which comply with the goals of our program and is to be used to help students choose a community service site. The directory includes job descriptions and contact names for each agency. If a student chooses to work at an agency that is not listed in the directory, that student must have approval from the appropriate grade level Community Service Advisor.
