Tenth Grade Great Works Project Winners Announced

The Great Works Project has every 10th-grade student select a piece of literature they believe to be a Great Work and advocate for why it should be taught in the third trimester of the 10th-grade year.
The Great Works Projects winners were announced on February 27 in an evening event at St. Andrew’s that welcomed every 10th-grade student and their families to MacDonald Hall. The Great Works Project, the signature academic program of sophomore year at St. Andrew’s, has every student in the grade select a piece of literature they believe to be a Great Work, and advocate for why it should be taught in the third trimester of the 10th-grade year.

Students select the work based on several critical criteria and have to present a persuasive oral argument to their classmates. Each class selects a winner, and they compete against each other for the right to have their work added to the curriculum. This year’s winners were Joel Crump ’26 for “Ragtime” by E.L. Doctorow and Alex Chalmers ’26 for Laura Hillenbrand’s “Unbroken.” This is the second time Unbroken has been selected with Johnny Casasola ’17 winning with the book.

The winners are selected by a panel of judges primarily comprised of the previous winners who are still students at St. Andrew’s. This year, that included Zara Koso-Thomas ’24, Eliora Adu ’24, Benny O’Neill ’25, and Melissa Nugent ’25. Crump and Chalmers will join them next year.
