Wang '17 Named a Winner in National Art Competition

Ben Wang ’17 has been named a Merit Winner in the National YoungArts Foundation’s annual student competition.
Wang submitted photographs of ten art works, including the model of the Student Center he built as a recipient of the Derek Park Fund Grant for Creative Innovation last spring, to the design arts category of the contest. Fewer than 10% of applicants were named competition winners.

“It definitely pushes me, knowing that I have something to work for,” Wang said. “I can compete with these other talented high schoolers and I can work harder.”

Visual Arts teacher Lauren Cook said students like Wang who are willing to have their art judged are “warriors.”

“Every time our students show their art work, whether in prestigious national competitions such as the one in which Ben has placed, regional and local competitions, or our Judges' Choice Awards exhibit here at St. Andrew's each spring, they have a chance to learn more about themselves as visual thinkers, artists and designers,” Cook said. “I deeply respect the courage it takes for these young people to put their work out there and be judged by the world.”

As a merit winner, Wang has been invited to participate in a regional YoungArts program this spring in Miami, Los Angeles or New York where he could participate in master classes and network with peers in art fields.

Wang previously earned honorable mention in another national competition, the 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. You can read about that by clicking here.
