Intermediate School Students Explore Urban Planning, Architecture

This week, 4th and 5th grades spent a day at the National Building Museum learning about building design and urban planning.  They practiced drawing a plan, section, and elevation of an object before taking on the role of architect. As an architect, students had to design a house to fit the lifestyle of their client.

In one workshop, students learned about designing a building to fit the needs of the people using it, for example, a flamenco dancer.

They practiced drawing a plan, section, and elevation of an object before taking on the role of architect. As an architect, students had to design a house to fit the lifestyle of their client. After drawing a plan for the house, they constructed the plan out of Legos.

In another workshop, students discussed the role of a city planner and issues to consider when deciding where industrial, residential, institutional, and commercial zones should be. Afterwards, students were assigned a zone and had to create a building, using recycled materials, to add to their city plan.
