Renowned University of Chicago Cosmologist Dr. Michael Turner Captivates AP Physics Class

Professor Michael Turner, Director of the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics at the University of Chicago, visited with our AP Physics and Physics 2 classes to discuss ideas of the universe’s origin and structure.

The renowned physicist, and father of faculty member Rachel Turner, spoke to the students about current ideas of the universe’s origin, structure, and ultimate destiny.

Throughout the talk Dr. Turner emphasized the need to bolster our theories with evidence.  He highlighted how we know that we live in an expanding universe, how we can count the number of galaxies in the observable universe, and how we can determine its age.

Professor Turner, who coined the term “dark energy,” also pointed out why we believe that this type of energy is such a large part of our universe.

The students, who were captivated by his talk, had far more questions than Dr. Turner had time to address and they enjoyed the rare opportunity to discuss far-reaching questions with a physicist whose daily work is spent endeavoring to understand the universe in which we find ourselves.
