The play, which became the inspiration for the musical, "Hello Dolly!" takes place in 1882 centers around matchmaker Dolly Levi who is helping old friend Horace Vandergelder find a new wife, not knowing that Dolly herself has designs on her client. Vandergelder runs a successful general story in Yonkers New York, and heads with Dolly into New York City to propose to hat maker, Irene Molloy.  His two clerks, Cornelius and Barnaby take advantage of their boss's absence by closing the store and sneaking off  to the big city to have an adventure. An adventure is just what they find themselves in as they duck into Mrs. Molloy's hat shop to avoid the irascible Mr. Vandergelder, whom they see on the street. Hilarity and romance follow in one of America's favorite comedies.
