St. Andrew's is excited to recognize David Lassiter ('04) for his writing and directorial debut "The Opportunist" which was the sole American film in competition in this year’s Critic’s Week, and the only American short film in competition at Cannes. According to Lassiter, he started making films at St. Andrew's in 2003 and credits his love of film to teacher Gary Wyatt and his classmates. "The Opportunist" has its world premiere in Cannes on May 18th. Click here for more information about the film.

Six Middle School students organized and facilitated a rousing discussion among their peers during Monday’s advisory on the topic of racially insensitive remarks. The six facilitators expertly led their groups with little help or intervention from adults.

Parents were invited to the Postoak Campus Tuesday for the Intermediate School's Technology Showcase. After a successful pilot program in 2011-12 with the fifth grade, St. Andrew's expanded the One-to-One Laptop Program to all of the Intermediate School (grades four through six) this past year. The one-to-one laptop initiative flows directly from the school's mission and current strategic plan, as it supports innovative, student-centered learning.

More than 60 middle and upper school students were honored for their artistic talent on Friday April 26th at the annual Visual Arts Awards assembly. Students were given awards in the following categories: Middle School Art, Photography, Computer Graphics, 3-Dimensional Art and Design, Ceramics, 2-Dimensional Art and Design, and Yearbook.

Emily Broeckaert ('14) was one of 50 young women selected to participate in the ANNpower Vital Voices Initiative. The program focuses on equipping the next generation of women leaders with the tools and skills they need to make a positive impact in their communities. The 2013 ANNpower Fellows represented 23 states and Puerto Rico and were chosen for their outstanding leadership potential and involvement in their communities.

The St. Andrew’s community recognized distinguished achievement in the performing arts on Thursday April 25th in an assembly that emphasized the school’s commitment to fostering students’ talent in areas involving vocal music, musical theatre, orchestral performance, dance, drama, jazz band, and technical theatre.

St. Andrew’s Head of School Robert Kosasky was honored on Monday when he was awarded The Washington Post Company Educational Foundation’s Distinguished Educational Leadership Award. Kosasky, who has led St. Andrew’s since 2002, was the only Head of an area Independent School to receive the honor. In total, 18 principals earned the award.

Thirteen students were inducted into the St. Andrew’s chapter of the Cum Laude Society on Tuesday morning in a ceremony attended by the entire student body as well as the honorees’ parents. Seniors Sutanu Biswas, Rebekah Daniels, Julia Grace, Simon Lewis, Britta Loftus, Harrison Nealley, and Samantha Spaccasi were joined by juniors Catherine Ahmad, Brian Bies, Aidan Herderschee, Layla Najjar, Izzy Schellenger and Aaron Sibarium in being inducted into the honorary group.

In an enthusiastic display of curiosity and adventurous spirit, members of the St. Andrew’s student body explored the world in a significant way during the spring break holiday. From the United States and Europe to Africa and Mexico, more than forty middle and upper school students joined their classmates on trips that were fun and exciting not to mention adventures in learning about other cultures.

Middle and Upper School parents, faculty and students were formally welcomed back Tuesday, after a restful Spring Break, in the Middle and Upper School Honors Assembly. The awards were a reflection of the academic and effort achievements during the second trimester of the 2012-2013 school year.

As part of our Lower School Parent Education Night series we recently highlighted our Everyday Mathematics program on the Village campus. Parents were briefly instructed on the background, evidence-based rationale, and scope and sequence of the Everyday Mathematics curriculum, including how the curriculum encourages multiple approaches to solving problems.

We welcomed Coach Bobby Horsey to the St. Andrew's athletic staff this year, as an indication of our intention to make our Varsity Boys Lacrosse team as competitive as possible. Horsey is renowned for his success in the sport and stands to be impactful to our program. DCSportsfan is in agreement as they touted Horsey's hire a "major coup" for the school. There is a shift in momentum for the Boys Varsity Basketball program, a point highlighted in the feature by Travis Mewhirter of The Gazette, in the Wednesday, March 6, 2013 edition. The article credits the improvement in the program to coach Kevin Jones' focus on a four year plan and the dynamic athleticism of junior Cedrick McFadden and sophomore Marcus Adkison. Having published two books and already working on her third, author Alexis Doyle ('14), shared her inspiration with Mocovox.com. The local publication interviewed the young author of “Jesse and His New Baby Sister” and “Ethan the Big Brother" discussing her future goals and the direction of her next book. The Math Department is looking forward to celebrating Pi Day, on Thursday March 14 (3.14).

As part of the Thursday Morning Meeting, the Math Department will hold a Pi Memorization contest for the Intermediate, Middle and Upper School, a Pi eating contest, and a Pi sing-along. We are looking forward to who will be proclaimed the 2013 Pi Day Memorization Champions.

St. Andrew's Episcopal School and the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning were the subject of a centerpiece on the Education page in Monday's edition of The Washington Post as a story by Valerie Strauss, titled "Brains Behind the Classes," highlighted the school and the way in which it utilizes the latest in brain research to improve teaching and learning.

The Inaugural winners of the Derek Park Fund Grant for Creative Innovation were awarded in Tuesday's morning meeting. The presentation was made by St. Andrew's Episcopal School's Head of School, Robert Kosasky, on behalf of Derek's parents Chong and Marie Park, who were also in attendance. Awards were given to Allie Sklarew ’15, Ethan Lockshin ’14, Sean Hess ’14, Troy Dahlke and Charles James. Peter Donahoe '15 presented a donation to the fund in honor of his classmate.

After months of hard work, the St. Andrew's Performing Arts department presented Pippin and received acclaim from the community. The favorable recognition continues as the Cappies review of the musical labeled it 'an outstanding production' and highlighted the talents of the musical artists and production team. St. Andrew’s Episcopal School’s Head of School Robert Kosasky announced the first-ever winners of the Derek Park Fund Grant for Creative Innovation on Friday morning, on what would have been the 16^th birthday of the former student who died tragically on November 26, 2011. Four awards will be handed out in total, two to students and two to faculty.

The Postoak Campus gathered this week to celebrate the outstanding Winter athletic season. In addition to the student body, parents joined faculty and staff, in Macdonald Hall, as each coach shared anecdotes about their team and announced top awards. St. Andrew’s played host to its first ever “Haiti Simple Supper” on Tuesday night. The event, held in MacDonald Hall, was an opportunity to help raise funds to support St. Andrew’s sister school Ecole Christ Roi in Civol, Haiti. The community event generated over $1,000.00 to help pay teacher salaries, provide classroom supplies, and facilitate the building of a water system for the people of Civol.

Students in the class of 2014 completed a rite of passage when they handed in the final bound copies of their Oral History Projects. In doing so, the students culminated a nearly four month experience that saw them research a specific historical experience associated with the life of an individual they chose to interview. The class of 2014 will officially celebrate the oral history experience on Monday March 4th at 7:00 pm in MacDonald Hall with the annual Oral History Night, an evening that will showcase the students’ projects and honor the individuals they interviewed.

Eleven members of the St. Andrew’s community recently returned from a five day trip that saw them visit the Christ Roi School in Civol, Haiti over President’s Day weekend. The purpose of the trip was to continue the relationship building that St. Andrew’s began with the school in February 2011.

The St. Andrew’s Players, made of Upper School actors, musicians and theatre technicians, look forward to presenting Pippin.

Performance Dates: Friday, February 22 at 7:30 pm, Saturday, February 23 at 2 pm and 7:30 pm Sunday, February 24 at 3 pm. Tickets are $3 for Students and Seniors and $7 for Adults. No reservations are necessary. The Saturday matinee will attended by student reviewers from the Cappies, and is free to all SAES students.

The annual Senior Art show opened Wednesday with a reception in Kreeger Gallery. The students spoke about their pieces and admired the work of their peers. The show not only highlights the artistic development of the students, but it gives them a first-hand opportunity to explore the intricacies of curating. Writer's Week 2013 began with a bang Tuesday as students enjoyed a block party complete with brownies at break. The four-day celebration partners successful writers within the community with the students here at St. Andrew's. The celebration culminates Friday when students and faculty members share their original works at the Writer's Assembly. Also, Friday is the Jeans for Books dress down day. The community will be able to purchase a sticker allowing them to wear jeans on Friday, and the money will go toward purchasing textbooks for our sister school in Haiti.

We are pleased to announce Britta Loftus (’13) placed first in her category at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), MD/DC Chapter, vocal competition on February 16, 2013 at Towson University. Britta is eligible to participate in the upcoming NATS regional competition to be held at the College of Charleston, S.C. April 5th and 6th.

Situated up by Fort Meade, the National Cryptologic Museum allowed our students to take a step back in time to learn about how cryptologists helped win wars, save lives, and change the course of history. Studying the American Revolution in class, we have examined a variety of sources, from first person accounts to picture books and Liberty's Kids videos to historical fiction novels. This field trip was a wonderful way to synthesize a lot of the information students have gained from our learning in class and to apply it to some of the real characters from the time.

Congratulations and thank you to the Mathletes (Laura Gordon, Elyse Sibarium, Megan Reilly, Callie Radecki, Sofia Gonzalez-Kosasky, Josh Magee, Robby Kasten, Dean Brown) and to their parents who awakened early on a cold Saturday morning to get their mathletes to the Regional competition at the University of Maryland. Congratulations to Laura Gordon ('17), who qualified for States and will represent St. Andrew's at the State Math Counts Meet on March 16 at the Johns Hopkins University. Way to go Laura!

St. Andrew's was recognized at an event held at the South African Embassy this week. Deputy Chief of Mission, Johnny Moloto, highlighted St. Andrew’s and Roy Barber’s role in the exchange program with the Bokamoso Youth, imploring others to follow the school’s model to be a light in the world.

This past week, as a part of Haiti Week, students on our Postoak campus participated in a flashgiving event of school supplies for our partner school Christ Roi in Haiti. Click here, to see the impressive work done in such a short time.

Encouraging self-awareness, exploration and insightful observation of the world through art are principal goals of St. Andrew’s Visual Arts Program. A well-constructed art project guides students through self-discovery and expression, while exposing them to new artistic styles and cultural traditions. The class, composed of new 9^th and 10^th grader collaborated with the Bokamoso Youth for two weeks to create a unique sphere of community portraiture. The whole project will be replicated and brought to the Bokamoso Center in Winterveldt, South Africa for installation there.

On Monday night, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School will hold its Senior Recognition ceremony for the Varsity Boys Basketball team before the final home game of the season. The 13-9 Lions, who are in the midst of one of the school’s best basketball seasons ever, will recognize five seniors, all of whom play an integral role in the make up of the team. Among those five are starters Lars Sorenson, Arman Izadpanah, and Kevin Stafford, as well as key shooters Jonny Consor and Patrick Collins. The opponent on Monday night will be the 12-10 Ad Fontes Academy Falcons.

This week, the members of the eighth grade class spent a fascinating day at the Montgomery County Courthouse, the seat of the county judicial system. Led by English teachers Samantha Speier and Kristin Cuddihy, and hosted by SAES dad and State’s Attorney Mr. Robert Hill, the class spent the morning visiting with lawyers, judges, K-9 unit officers and homicide detectives.

Students, faculty, and staff on the Postoak campus participated in a Flashgiving event to collect school supplies for Haiti. Inspired by the trend of flashmobs gathering to dance and delight an unsuspecting crowd, Flashgiving happens in a 10-minute timeframe and it shows how we can do great good in a short amount of time.

Alex Armbruster broke a pair of school records over the weekend as the St. Andrew’s boys and girls indoor track and field teams competed twice, first at the Episcopal High School Open, then at the Private School Invitational. Armbruster, a junior, set both his records at the Private School Invitational, held at Georgetown Prep, breaking the mark in the 1600 meters as well as the 3200 meters.

This year's family heritage festival is Friday, February 1; from 6 - 8:30 PM. Lower School families are showcasing their family's heritage by hosting tables and sharing information with students as they visit each table. Students are given a passport and will receive a sticker as they "visit" each country.

The Winter Concert that took place on Sunday Jan.27, was a huge success, with incredible performance by Middle School Band, SRO, and SAES Jazz Band.

Six students represented St. Andrew's Tuesday at the Metro DC Middle School Student Diversity Leadership Conference. The conference sponsored by East Ed will explore how to make schools more inclusive and give the students an opportunity to learn from each other. With nearly 680 students expected to attend, we are excited to see what our delegates have to share with the students and faculty members upon their return.

The Math Counts team will participate in the 4th Annual Carderock Math Contest on Friday, January 25. This contest is held at the Naval Surface Warfare Center. The students take part in the contest, have a tour of the facilities, hear a speaker, and witness the exciting Countdown Round. The tour gives them an opportunity to see what happens in the large pools that the engineers use for testing ships and to see the different types of work that navy engineers are engaged in.

Saturday was the National Day of Service and as usual, the St. Andrew's community came out in a big way. More than 225 students, teachers, administrators, parents and friends from all four divisions came to the Postoak Campus to produce 20,000 meals for South Africa and other areas of need in the world.

The class of 2015 pulled off the unthinkable on Friday afternoon by winning the annual Whiz Quiz, an event usually won by the senior class. The sophomores defeated the other classes despite being in third place at the end of the first round.

St. Andrew's excitedly welcomed Bokamoso to the campus Monday, for their month-long stay. Every year since 2002, the Bokamoso Youth Centre and St. Andrew’s Episcopal School have participated in an exchange program. Each March, students from St. Andrew’s visit the Bokamoso Youth Centre where they learn about life in Winterveldt(South Africa), provide community service, and bond with Bokamoso youth. Every year in America, almost 34 million tons of food goes to waste. Meanwhile, hunger remains one of significant challenges for progress and prosperity in many parts of the world as well as for many families locally in our community. On Saturday, January 19th, all divisions of St. Andrew's are coming together for our 3rd Annual MLK Day of Service. Our focus is hunger and our service is going to be bold.

After reading "A New Wave of Robots" in the December 3 Scholastic News Magazine, the 4th grade was treated to a very special demonstration on Wednesday afternoon. Officer Olin, dad of Katie and Caroline Olin, is a Fire and Explosive Investigator and Bomb Technician with the Office of the Fire Marshal. As you can imagine, this was quite an experience for our 4th graders!

The girls and boys basketball teams each picked up league wins on Tuesday night, one in dramatic fashion, the other with a comfortable margin of victory.

Two St. Andrew's athletes received the prestigious Washington Post All-Met recognition for their accomplishments this fall. Jarena Harmon ’15 earned Honorable Mention recognition in soccer while EJ Douglass ‘13 earned the distinction for his efforts in cross country.

Twenty-four St. Andrew’s students traveled to Chicago last week to participate in the Chicago International Model United Nations Conference. With well over a thousand students attending from all over the United States as well as the world, the conference offered students the opportunity to experience “an accurate portrayal of the challenges faced by real-life diplomats and politicians.”

The SAES Boys varsity basketball team beat Landon for the first time in school history. The score was 58 to 53 and was a very close match throughout the game. Arman Izadpanah ('13) hit a huge shot towards the end of the game to seal the win for the Lions. For images from the game click here.

Two students from St. Andrew's will be attending the Student Diversity Leadership Conference in Houston, Texas this week. Louay Youssef ('14) and Aidan Lucas ('16) will represent the school at the conference and plan to return empowered to continue their diversity work. While St. Andrew's has been a part of this conference for many years, this year is especially note-worthy as the students will witness Rodney Glasgow, Head of the Middle School, serve in his other capactiy as founder and co-chair of the conference.

Troy Dahlke, an instructor in St. Andrew’s Religion and Philosophy department, presented at the 2012 American Academy of Religion (AAR) annual meeting held in Chicago just before Thanksgiving. His paper Faith Worketh by Charity: Mitigating the Tension between Aquinas and Luther examined problems that exist on the question of justification before God between the Catholic and Lutheran churches.

SAES sponsored the 28th Holiday Basketball Invitational and both the Girls and Boys varsity teams took top ranking. The Girls team rallied in the second half of the championship match against Covenant Life to an exciting finish and won 37-33. The Boys team faced St. Anselm in their championship match and secured the win, 60-36.

St. Andrew's families gathered this week in advance of the arrival of the Bokamoso Youth program students. For the past 10 years, St. Andrew's families have volunteered to host the students while they visit the Washington, D.C. area. The Bokamoso Youth Center is in Winterveldt, South Africa.

On Tuesday December 4, the 10^th grade and 12^th grade AP English classes will voyage down to Arena Stage to witness the award-winning musical My Fair Lady, based on George Bernard Shaw’s most incisive social satire Pygmalion.

St. Andrew's announced The Derek Park Fund Grant For Creative Innovation this week to its faculty and staff members. Derek Park was a student at St. Andrew’s from grade 6 through the end of the first trimester of his 9th grade year when he tragically died on November 26, 2011. The Derek Park Fund, established at the time of Derek’s death, is used to fund both a teacher grant and a student grant for creative innovation and personal development.

Students in Alex Haight’s senior history elective were treated to a special tour of the National Archive’s current exhibit "To the Brink: JFK and the Cuban Missile Crisis." The exhibit, which is showing until February 3^rd, 2013, honors the 50^th anniversary of the crisis.

The St. Andrew’s boys’ cross country team had a banner day on Saturday at the Maryland-D.C. Private School State Championship by winning the small school state title for the first time since 2009.

Senior EJ Douglass made history over the weekend at Bullis as he became the first ever Montgomery County Independent School Cross Country champion. Douglass easily outdistanced the other competitors to win the race by forty seconds in a time of 16:45. Senior captain Harrison Nealley and sophomore Will Dove also earned All-County honors to help the Lions to a third place finish of seven teams.

AP Biology seniors and the second grade class partnered Wednesday to work on a squid dissection. The cross-divisional parternership brought smiles and a sense of accomplishment to the second grade class and yielded reflections from the seniors about the successful pairing. History Teacher Michael Chapper is making sure that his 7th grade Civics students understand as many facets about Election Day as possible. His students have spent weeks learning about the candidates--not just the presidential ones--and issues on the ballot. The culmination takes place on Election Day as the Civics class will educate the rest of 7th and 8th grade students about one of the three Maryland referendums and then the students will get a chance to vote.

We are pleased to announce that one of our faculty members, Ms. Kristin Cuddihy, has been named a finalist in The Gazette newspaper's My Favorite Teacher program. The annual program encourages students to nominate a teacher that has truly made a difference their lives. We are pleased to announce that Britta Loftus ('13) has been awarded first place in High School Opera in the AAMS (Asian American Music Society) International Competition held on October 27, 2012.

The SAES boys team won the Middle School Soccer tournament hosted on the Postoak campus.

The Upper School fall play is an exciting and surprising offering, Hannah Cowley’s “The Belle’s Stratagem.” Written in 1780 by a playwright at the height of her comic powers, the play explores love and marriage against the backdrop of London’s whirlwind society in the late 18^th century.

St. Andrew’s and Lionel Delatour of Gallery C in Port au Prince proudly presented over 85 paintings by contemporary Haitian artists in Kreeger Gallery. In presenting “Colors of a Culture: Haitian Life in Art”, we pay tribute to our developing friendship, our common goals, and our future work together.

For the last 10 years, St. Andrew’s has been committed to taking the entire Upper and Middle schools to dramatic productions across the Washington region. This year's series begins Thursday October 11, when the 11th and 12th grades witness the award-winning dramatization of Ralph Ellison's classic novel, Invisible Man. The Middle School students will see Fly, Thursday October 18th at Ford's Theatre. Later in the year, the 10th graders will see My Fair Lady and the 9th graders will see Metamorphoses, both at Arena Stage.

The annual Blessing of the Animals service gave the Lower and Intermediate school students an opportunity to celebrate and pray for the animals that enrich their lives.

On Friday, October 5th students will be allowed to wear denim to support breast cancer research. To be eligible to participate students need to buy a denim day sticker for a $1.00.

Two speakers at the diversity assembly this week attempted to describe Arabic culture to the Middle and Upper School students on Monday. Dr. Zayd Eldadah deftly guided us through hundreds of years of Arabic culture, including the influence of the language, inventions, scientific, and mathematic discoveries. Ms. Zaina Barakat spoke from the perspective a young person who grew up as a Lebanese American in Bethesda. A special thanks goes to Ms. Norma Najjar (mom of 11^th grader Layla Najjar) for arranging the speakers’ visit.

The Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, led the St. Andrew's Episcopal School Community in a blessing and dedication of the new Intermediate School building Tuesday.

Parents, faculty and students came together Friday to recognize Middle and Upper School students at the Honors Assembly.

Middle and Upper School students celebrated the Jewish High Holy Days, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Wednesday in Macdonald Hall. Senior Sarah Strum, served as the homilist for the intimate service.

The service also included readings and prayers presented by members of the St. Andrew’s community.

Last week, I traveled to Haiti on a quick four-day trip to participate in the blessing of the new five-room school building at our partner school, Christ Roi Episcopal School. Read about the trip and how things have changed in Haiti since our partnership began by clicking on read more.

It has been less then two years since St. Andrew’s first formed its partnership with Christ Roi School in Civol, Haiti, and in that time, the small rural co-ed Episcopal school has undergone some tremendous changes.

St. Andrew's varsity soccer teams repeated last year's victories in the 16th Annual Francisco E. Hope Garces Memorial Soccer Tournament. The tournament began Friday, September 7th and concluded Saturday, September 8th.
