Upper School Admission Process
We welcome inquiries about the application process throughout the year. Contact the Admission Office for information, 301-983-5200, ext. 236, email admission@saes.org, or inquire online. February 1 is the deadline for the application, fee, interview, and all supporting materials. Applications received after the February 1 deadline will be considered if space becomes available.
Application
Please submit both the application and $50 fee as early as possible, preferably before the admission interview. Click here for the application form.
Tour and interview with student and parent(s)
Please call the Admission Office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. (In the case of bad weather, please read our inclement weather policy to see whether or not appointments will proceed as scheduled.)
Recommendation
Applicants to Upper School should submit two recommendations (one from current English teacher and one from current math teacher), unless the applicant has only one main classroom teacher. In the latter instance, one recommendation is sufficient. Please note that the required recommendations must be from the applicant’s current teachers. Click here for the English recommendation form and here for the math recommendation form.
Supplemental letters may also be submitted, including any recommendations from former teachers, teachers of other subjects, extracurricular activity advisors, and/or coaches. For any additional recommendations, please use the form titled, “Common Recommendation Form for Students Applying to Independent Schools, entering grades 2-12” available here.
Transcript
The transcript must include current trimester or semester grades and test scores. Please complete and submit the release form to your child’s current school. Click here for the transcript release form.
Testing
For applicants to Middle and Upper School, St. Andrew's accepts both the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) and the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). In order to meet our admission deadline, we suggest that you register for the November, December, or January testing dates for either test. Please be sure that you ask for the results to be sent to St. Andrew's; our SSAT number is 6266 and our ISEE number is 211222. Registration Guides are available from the Admission Office, or register and gather information online at SSAT or ERB.
If the applicant has had any educational or psychological testing done in the past 3 years, other than standardized testing such as the SSAT, submit a full copy of the test report and recommendations along with the other application materials.
Half-day visit (optional)
Students who have submitted their application to St. Andrew's are welcome to visit classes for a morning on specially designated days in January and February. Appointments for class visits may be scheduled upon completion of the admission interview. Visitors do not typically stay for lunch; however, they may bring a light snack or money to buy a snack for the morning break at 10:00am. Arrival time is 8:15 am at the Admission Office, which is located in the Kiplinger House adjacent to the main school building on the Postoak Campus. Student hosts will meet their guests at the Admission Office and will bring them back to the Admission Office for pick-up. On most days, pick-up time is 11:50am for both Middle and Upper School visitors. Parking is available on campus. In the case of bad winter weather, please read our inclement weather policy to see whether or not half-day visits will proceed as scheduled.
