
Lower School Admission Process
We welcome inquiries about the application process throughout the year. Contact the Admission Office for information, 301-983-5200, ext. 236, email admission@saes.org, or inquire online. February 1 is the deadline for the application, fee, interview, and all supporting materials. Applications received after the February 1 deadline will be considered if space becomes available.
Application
Please submit both the application and $50 fee as early as possible, preferably before the admission interview. Click here for the application form.
Tour and interview with parent(s)
Please call the Lower School Admission Office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. (In the case of bad weather, please read our inclement weather policy to see whether or not appointments will proceed as scheduled.)
Recommendation
Applicants to Preschool through Grade 3 are required to submit one recommendation. Families should ask their child’s current teacher to complete a recommendation form. The teachers should return the forms directly to the Admission Office. Please note that the required recommendation must be from the applicant’s current teacher. Supplemental letters may also be submitted, including any recommendations from former teachers, teachers of other subjects, extracurricular activity advisors, and/or coaches. Transcript
The transcript must include current trimester or semester grades and test scores. Please complete and submit the release form to your child’s current school (if applicable). The school should send copies of complete transcripts and comments, as well as the results of educational evaluations, directly to the Admission Office. Click here for the transcript release form.
Testing
Applicants to Kindergarten through Grade 3 are required to have an admission test individually administered by an approved educational diagnostician at a testing service center. The appropriate test is administered according to specific age guidelines. Younger children take the Wechsler Preschool & Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPSSI-III), while those over age six take the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV). Student visit
Applicants to Preschool through Pre-Kindergarten – Applicants are invited to participate in a group visit of approximately one hour (January or February). At this time teachers will have the opportunity to meet and observe applicants. The purpose of the visit is to assess the child’s developmental level and assist the school in appropriate placement.
Applicants to Kindergarten through Grade 3 – After the application is submitted, children are asked to spend a day in the classroom with the students of their current grade level. The purpose of this visit is to assess the child’s developmental level and assist the school in appropriate placement.
Financial Aid (optional)
Information on financial aid is sent out after the application is submitted. Check the appropriate box on the application if you would like to receive a packet. For more information on financial aid, click here.
